The zip is nearly five times the size of the municipality, and it crosses a county line: the Town itself sits entirely in Wake County, while the southern part of the zip is in Harnett County.

The practical consequence catches almost everyone: your mailing address does not tell you which fence rules apply to your yard. Two neighbors with identical "Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526" addresses can be under different height limits, different school districts and different county governments.

You probably don't need a permit — but you do need your HOA

Straight from the Town's FAQ: a permit is not required for the installation of a fence in Fuquay-Varina's corporate limits or ETJ. A pool, a shed or a detached garage does need one. A fence does not.

What you almost certainly do need is written architectural approval from your HOA. A little local history, since we're neighbors

The town is two towns. Fuquay Springs grew up around a mineral spring a Fuquay descendant turned up while plowing a field around 1858 — the spring house still stands in Fuquay Mineral Spring Park. Varina was named for a woman who signed her letters to a Civil War soldier named Ballentine that way; he married her and named his store and post office after the signature. The two merged in 1963, and you can still walk between the two downtowns in about fifteen minutes — S. Main on the Fuquay side, Broad Street on the Varina side, where Aviator Brewing sits in the 1903 train depot.
