Fence installation in Angier, NC
Angier is about six miles southeast of Fuquay-Varina, and it is growing fast. The U.S. Census Bureau counted 5,265 people in 2020 and estimates about 9,410 in 2025, a jump of nearly 80% (Census QuickFacts). Zip code 27501.
Angier is a Harnett County town
The Town of Angier is based in Harnett County, not Wake. That means different town and county offices than Fuquay-Varina or Holly Springs. It cuts the other way too: zip 27526 crosses into Harnett County, so some homes with a Fuquay-Varina mailing address are in Harnett as well (see our Fuquay-Varina page). Check which town or county covers your lot before you plan a fence.
Does Angier require a fence permit?
Yes, inside town limits. The fence section of the Town's Unified Development Ordinance (Section 7.3.5) says: “A land use permit shall be required for the installation of a fence within the corporate limits of the town.” The Town's Planning & Permitting page also lists fences among the projects that need a Land Use Permit (Town of Angier: Planning & Permitting). That is different from Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs, which generally don't require a fence permit. Our Fuquay-Varina permit guide explains that side.
The Land Use Permit form is listed on the Town's Planning & Permitting page. The Town's main phone line is (919) 639-2071.
The permit sentence refers to the Town's corporate limits. If you live just outside town, ask the Planning Department whether Town rules apply to your lot.
How tall can a fence be in Angier?
For homes, the ordinance's fence table allows:
- Front yard: up to 4 feet.
- Side and rear yards: up to 6 feet.
- Taller than 6 feet: may be approved on residential property only with a special use permit from the Board of Adjustment.
The same table also lists which materials are allowed in each yard. Ask the Planning Department which materials fit your yard before you order anything.
Easements and low ground
The ordinance says fences “shall not be installed within or across any private or public easement.” In wetlands or floodplain areas, a fence must have at least four inches of open space at the bottom so water can flow through. These rules come from Section 7.3.5, as reproduced in a Town Board of Adjustment packet (Town of Angier, April 22, 2025 Board of Adjustment agenda). The full ordinance is on the Town's code of ordinances site.
Outside town limits: unincorporated Harnett County
Harnett County Planning Services says the county “does not regulate fences on residential lots, and no fence permits are required to erect a fence.” It also says a fence can't be in an easement or right-of-way, and it recommends building the fence 1 foot off the property line to avoid disputes with a neighbor. The county does regulate fences in a few special cases, such as a required landscape buffer or a manufactured home park (Harnett County Planning Services). If your home is inside a town's limits, that town's rules apply instead.

Only with a special use permit from the Board of Adjustment on a residential property.
Can a fence go in an easement in Angier?

What if my yard is in a floodplain?
The ordinance requires at least four inches of open space at the base of the fence so water can flow through.
New lots, packed soil
Angier's growth means a lot of new construction, and new construction often means bare graded lots with packed fill soil. Packed clay drains slowly, so post depth and drainage at the post base matter. Our guide to red clay and fence posts explains why.
